About Camp and Austin
Austin was diagnosed with Diabetes when he was 4 with a blood sugar of1296. Normal is 80 to 150. The doctor's said he wouldn't make itthrough the night, well he is 11 now :) He is trying to raise the moneyto go to diabetes camp. Two years ago he had to come home early andmissed out on lots of activities because he had gotten really sick. This year he really wants to go back and be able to stay all week. Heis now on an insulin pump that has his diabetes under much bettercontrol.
The Big Shot Resident Camp is (held each summer at CampLibbey in Defiance, OH) is the only camp of its kind in Northwest Ohioto offer a week-long outdoor adventure for pre-teen and teenagechildren with diabetes. Campers with diabetes are welcome to share theweek with friends or family members who may not have diabetes and whocare about someone who does. The camp provides a valuable opportunityfor all youths to experience each other's uniqueness.
Camperscan enjoy the "Exertrail", swimming in the half Olympic-sized pool, horseback riding, making quality crafts, and hiking on more than 300acres of forest and fields along the Maumee River. Educational sessionsare built into the program, promoting independence away from home. Thisyear includes rock climbing, paintball, and a day at Cedar Point!
BigShots Resident Camp helps children learn to manage their diabetesindependently, while being supervised by Certified Diabetes Educators.Positive experiences like the DYS Camp help to give kids the confidenceto attend other area recreational and sports camps. Nurses, dietitiansand young adults who have diabetes will complement the camp counselors, nurses and recreation staff provided by Camp Libbey.
Even a $1would help. Please make a donation by clicking on the "Chip In" buttonto the right. Any donation will help pay for his summer camp. Alldonations are securely sent and you will receive an email with aprintable record of your donation.
If you're wondering how muchof your donation will be taken for "service fees" the answer is 1.5%for the credit card processing. I always ask this because some of those"non-profit" companies take a huge percentage of donations which ispretty crappy of them. 7.5% is a reasonable amount. Thanks so much fortaking the time to read this.
